What we find behind the tile.
A bathroom that looks tired on the surface is often fine underneath, and sometimes it is not: water that has been getting behind a tub surround for years, a wall that is black with mould, a subfloor gone soft at the toilet flange. The difference is not visible until the tile comes off, and it decides what the job is.
In a house built before 1990 there is a second question. Drywall compound, plaster, tile adhesive and sheet flooring from that era can contain asbestos. We test what needs testing before anything is cut, and the file says what was found.
What we find is fixed before the new bathroom goes in. A new tub surround over a wet wall is a mould job a year later.
How it works
How a bathroom runs.
Look and measure
What you want, what is there, and what we can see of the water story: stains, soft spots, the state of the silicone, where the fan goes.
Test what needs testing
In a pre-1990 house, samples of the materials that will be disturbed go to an accredited lab before the strip-out. Until the result is back they are treated as containing asbestos.
Strip out under containment
The doorway sealed, the floors beyond protected, dust kept to the room. The old fixtures, tile and board come out and go straight to the bin.
Fix what was found
Mould removed properly, not painted over. Rotten framing and subfloor replaced. Moving a valve or running new supply is a licensed plumber's work, arranged as part of the job.
Build
Board, waterproofing where water will land, tile, tub or shower, vanity and toilet set on new seals, paint, and every bead of silicone cut back to a clean substrate and renewed.
Hand back
Cleaned down, with the record of what was found and done on your page, and the finished room photographed if you are happy for it to be.
$295 for the on-site assessment, and it comes off the price of the work when you go ahead with us. Conditions apply: the work has to come to $2,500 or more, and the deposit has to be paid within 30 days of approval. If the material tests clean there is nothing to remove, so the assessment stands on its own — which is usually the cheapest result there is. Laboratory charges are separate either way, because the lab invoices us whether or not the work goes ahead.

Questions
What people ask us.
Who buys the fixtures?
You choose and buy the vanity, toilet, tile, tub or shower set and the fittings. We tell you what to look for, what will not fit, and which shower sets are a simple swap on your existing valve and which mean opening the wall for a plumber. Show us before you buy and we will tell you which it is.
Do you do the plumbing?
Setting a toilet on a new seal, connecting a vanity, fitting a shower head and trim to the existing valve: ours. Moving a valve, a new drain, new supply lines: a licensed plumber, scheduled as part of the job so you are not finding one yourself.
There is mould. Does that change things?
Yes. It is removed as a remediation, the wet material comes out, the cause is found, and the room is dried and checked before it is closed up. It is not painted over and it is not boxed in behind new tile.
How long will my bathroom be out of action?
It depends on what is behind the tile and on what you have chosen, so we tell you before we start rather than guessing here, and the plan sits on your page where you can see it move.
What does it cost?
A fixed price in writing once we have looked and measured. If the strip-out finds something the price did not cover, we show you and price it before going further; nothing is added to your bill until you say yes.
My house is from the 1960s. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, a step. The materials that will be disturbed are tested first, and the job is planned around the result. Most of the time it is a small delay for a lab result; occasionally it means the strip-out is done as abatement.
