The work
Safeway Demo & Environmental Services does asbestos, mould, demolition, water and fire restoration, and the rebuild that follows. The rebuild is where we need more hands: painting, drywall and taping, flooring, plumbing, carpentry and trim, insulation. This is a sign-up for our subcontractor network and our crew: trades who take parts of our jobs, either on their own account or on our crew by the hour. How it works once you are in - Jobs are posted to your phone. You ask for the ones you want; the office confirms who gets each one. - What a job pays you is set by the office before you start, and it is on your screen when the job is. - You check in and out from your phone. Your days are logged as you go, and you invoice from the same place. - Every job you take earns points. Standing is earned, never handed out, and higher standing sees new jobs earlier. What happens after you apply 1. A person reads your application. No software decides. 2. A phone interview. 3. An in-person meeting, with your tools, where we talk about the work and the site rules. 4. If we go ahead: you sign the Safeway agreement, which includes the site and workplace rules and a clause that you do not take Safeway's clients for your own work during the engagement or for 12 months after. 5. The first three months are a probation period. Keep the standard and the work keeps coming. There is no fee to join.
Requirements
- A trade from this list: painting, drywall, taping, flooring, plumbing, carpentry or trim, insulation, general labour. Tell us which, and how long you have done it. - Photos of your last few jobs. Attach them, or send them when we call. This matters more than a résumé. - Your hourly rate and your day rate, so we can see if we match. New people on our crew start at $21 an hour; experienced trades are paid for what they bring. - Your own tools and a way to get to the job. - Your own WSIB clearance and liability insurance if you work on your own account. If you do not have them yet, say so; we can tell you what is needed. - A phone you can use on site: jobs, check-in and invoices all run from it. - Asbestos or mould experience is a plus, not a requirement. Ministry-approved Type 3 asbestos training is needed only for abatement work.
